The loss of a companion animal is intense and can often feel unbearable. It leaves an emptiness in our lives that washes over one in waves of sadness, guilt, and loss. Guilt is a huge issue if one has to make the decision to put a pet down, or if the gate door was left open, or if one feels they should have seen that the animal was ill or acting differently. And there is anger with oneself for having to play God with another being's life. And anger with others for not understanding the pain associated with the loss of your loved one.
So what does one do with the pain of loss? Talk about it. Share your feelings. Cry. Talk about the great times you had together, with someone who understands. Remember the happiness you had with your buddy. Grieve with someone who understands and cares about what you're going through.
